How take-home salary is calculated

Your CTC includes your basic salary, HRA, allowances, and your employer's PF contribution. Take-home pay subtracts your own PF contribution and income tax from your gross salary.

Take-home = CTC − Employee PF − Income Tax

Example: a ₹12,00,000 CTC works out to roughly ₹98,000 in-hand per month under the new regime (FY 2025-26) — taxable income falls within the ₹12,00,000 rebate threshold, so no income tax is due. A ₹18,00,000 CTC, by contrast, works out to around ₹1,36,000 in-hand.

Tips to increase your in-hand pay

  • Use tax-saving investments under Section 80C if you're on the old regime.
  • Ask your employer to structure allowances tax-efficiently (meal cards, LTA, etc).
  • Compare old vs. new tax regime each year — the better one can change.
  • Contribute to NPS for an additional deduction beyond the 80C limit.
