Your income, split
How the 50/30/20 rule works
The 50/30/20 rule is a simple way to allocate your take-home pay without tracking every category in detail. Half goes to essentials, less than a third to lifestyle spending, and a fifth to your future self.
Needs = Income × 0.5, Wants = Income × 0.3, Savings = Income × 0.2
Example: on a ₹50,000 take-home income, that's ₹25,000 for needs, ₹15,000 for wants, and ₹10,000 for savings.
Tips to make the split work
- Pay yourself first — move the 20% to savings before spending on anything else.
- If needs run over 50%, target your biggest fixed cost (usually rent) first.
- Track wants loosely with a weekly cap rather than itemising every purchase.
- Revisit the split whenever your income or rent changes.
